Neurophysiology Technologist, The Hospital for Sick Children

The Hospital for Sick Children, affectionately known as Sick Kids, is one of the largest paediatric academic health science centres in the world, with an international reputation for excellence in health care, research, and education.

As a local hospital, Sick Kids meets the basic health needs of children who live in the City of Toronto.  But more than half the patients come form outside the city - from the greater metropolitan area, and from other parts of the province of Ontario and Canada.  Last year patients came from 49 countries outside North America.

For more than 40 years the staff of the Research Institute have carried our research which impacted child health around the world.  The list of achievements range from the development of Pablum to the discovery of a number of genes including those for Duchenne muscular dystrophy, cystic fibrosis, and Tay Sachs disease.

Today, activities encompass everything from basic research conducted at the laboratory bench to inquiries made at the bedside and out in the community.

As one of the teaching hospitals for The University of Toronto, Sick Kids provides education, training, and specialized paediatric experience to medical students and residents from the Faculty of Medicine, and nursing education to students of the Faculty of Nursing.  Doctors, nurses and other health care professionals from around the world come to The Hospital for Sick Children for specialized health sciences education and research training.
